Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at brierislandfoundation@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The goal of the Brier Island Foundation is to support partners, projects, and activities happening on Brier Island, Nova Scotia.  We do this by helping raise funds, promote island activities, and raise the profile of Brier Island.  We work with the existing organizations on the ground on Brier Island who are doing amazing work in different areas such as trails, conservation, recreation, education, heritage, arts, etc.

The Brier Island Foundation is led by a Board of Directors made up of community members.   The Board meets quarterly and provides oversight and strategic direction for the organization.  An Executive Committee meets more regularly to support the day-to-day activities of the Foundation.

Donations are received to the Brier Island Community Fund, a partnership with the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia.  This partnerships allows donors to receive a tax receipt for their donation.  The Board of the Brier Island Foundation makes decisions about how funds will be allocated.  For example, our first 3 disbursements from the Brier Island Community Fund went to three local organizations: $250 for the Brier Island Trails Committee (BITC), $250 for Save an Island Lighthouse (SAIL2), and $250 for the Islands Historical Society.

The Brier Island Foundation does not pay any staff and the entire operation is volunteer-run.  There is an insurance policy that is considered an administrative cost that the Foundation has set up.  There are also minimal monthly bank charges.  These admin cost do not come out of any community donations received.
